Moving on from Crivelli’s painted gold, the itinerary takes in the sculpted gold of the reliquaries and religious ornaments set with precious stones, with particular reference to two examples conserved in the museums of sacred art.
The Museo Sistino di Arte Sacra di Castignano houses the beautiful reliquary of the Santa Croce. In gilded silver, the 15th-century reliquary contains a filigree cross decorated with precious stones, and is one of the most evident examples of the survival of gothic style in Renaissance gold-work in the Ascoli area.
